Why is a Women’s Open contender wearing the New England Patriots logo? | Golf news and tour information
For a few years now, second-year LPGA player Alexa Pano has been the only woman in professional golf to wear an NFL logo on her clothing and bag. Word is that Pano, 20, and her family, who hail from the Boston suburbs, are fanatical New England Patriots fans, and when she qualified for the 2022 U.S. Open, they decided there was enough room on her bag for one of the coolest logos in sports. (Come on, admit it, Bills fans.)
But as famous as the logo is, young Pano is still finding her way in the professional game after first gaining exposure as a seven-year-old in the children’s golf documentary “The Short Game.” Pano earned her first victory last August in a joint LPGA-LET sanctioned event, albeit in Northern Ireland, and received little attention in the States.
Pano’s profile will no doubt rise on Sunday morning when she starts the final round of the AIG Women’s Open at St Andrews just four shots behind leader Jijai Shin. And with Pano undoubtedly wearing a jacket on what is expected to be another cold and blustery summer’s day in Scotland, many spectators will be asking: “What’s with that Pats logo?”
“For me, it’s a really great deal,” Pano said Saturday after shooting a second straight 69 on the Old Course to finish three under par and tied for sixth. “They support me in everything I do, and it’s really cool to have something you idolize and have seen on TV support you.”
Panos’ father Rick, who plays a prominent role in the film, is a longtime Patriots season ticket holder. Alexa, not surprisingly, adopted Dad’s team and it seemed natural to put the logo on her bag for the U.S. Women’s Open when she didn’t have many sponsors while toiling on the Epson Tour. (She skipped college and turned pro at 17.)
“We put the Patriots logo on it because it was special to my family and stuff. This was supposed to be a week-long ordeal,” Pano said. “I did an interview with the Patriots about it that week and didn’t think anything of it, but thought it was great.”
“The next week I went on the Epson Tour again and they wanted to make it permanent and make the relationship official.”
Of course, that relationship comes with some perks. Pano said she has met members of the Kraft family, which owns the team, and spent some time on the field at a game against the Chiefs last season. She was blown away by her meeting with GOAT Tom Brady, but also noted with a smile, “I’m a huge Julian Edelman fan, too.”
But even those guys pale in comparison to Pano’s opportunity to see arguably the biggest star in the world: Taylor Swift.
“They helped me get some tickets for the Eras tour last year,” Pano said, “so that was really cool.”
