Weber State football team opens season with 1-1 tie against Utah Tech | News, Sports, Jobs

From the start, the Weber State women’s soccer team seemed poised to match its win total from last season until a corner kick imbalance became too great to stop.

The Wildcats ended up playing a 1-1 tie with Utah Tech on Thursday night at Wildcat Soccer Field in the first game of the regular season in the 2024-25 school year (regardless of sport).

The Wildcats were the first to get on the scoreboard. Ali Swensen ran with a ball from Sayler Schlosser and smashed a 25-yard one-timer over Utah Tech keeper Brianna Frey in the 18th minute.

Weber State shot 14 times and had seven on goal. Frey was otherwise great for the Trailblazers, stopping five shots from WSU in the second half alone.

Utah Tech had just one shot on goal and that was enough. On UTU’s fifth corner kick of the game, Adele Faller put the ball exactly where the Trailblazers needed it in the 67th minute and Bre Koscielski headed a ground shot past WSU goalkeeper Hadley Harris to tie the game.

According to a new rule in college soccer, the competition ended after 90 minutes without overtime.

As a school, Utah Tech played its first official competition in any sport as a full Division I program (now eligible for postseason competition) after the Trailblazers’ probationary period ended this summer.

Weber State will next play five straight road games, beginning with a game at San Diego State on Sunday afternoon.
