Weather forecast for California: September heatwave leaves Southern California groaning

There are only a few weeks left until the official start of fall, but September is already starting off scorching hot in Southern California, with a brutal heat wave expected to continue for the next few days.

The peak of the heat wave is expected Tuesday through Friday, with forecast highs of over 80 degrees on the coast, over 80 degrees in several inland communities, and triple digits in the valleys, foothills, and Inland Empire.

In view of the upcoming heat wave, the National Weather Service (NWS) plans to issue a heat warning for most of the Southland areas.

During the heat wave, the NWS reminds people that homeless people, the elderly, pregnant women and children are most at risk for heat illness.

A heat advisory for extreme heat will go into effect in the Inland Empire from 11 a.m. Wednesday to 9 p.m. Friday as temperatures are expected to return to triple digits. Residents are asked to stay indoors with air conditioning, stay hydrated and limit their time outdoors.

The same warning also applies to many Southern California communities in Los Angeles, Ventura and Orange counties, including Beverly Hills, Lancaster, Pyramid Lake, Valencia, Los Angeles, Compton, Culver City, East LA, Glendale, Hollywood, Simi Valley, Okai, Pomona, Pasadena and areas along the Angeles Crest Highway.

This also applies to inland areas of Orange County, including Anaheim, Santa Ana, Mission Viejo, Fullerton, Orange, Irvine and Garden Grove.

From 11 a.m. Wednesday to 8 p.m. Friday, a heat warning is in effect for inland Orange County and the Santa Ana Mountains and Foothills; temperatures may reach up to 40 degrees Celsius.

A heat warning went into effect Tuesday morning in the western San Fernando Valley and will remain in effect until 8 p.m. Friday. According to the NWS, Thursday and Friday will be the hottest days in the region, with temperatures reaching 115 degrees.

How long will the heat wave last?

The heat wave is expected to continue for the next few days.

Authorities advised the population to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, avoid the sun and check on relatives and neighbors.

Residents were also urged never to leave children or pets in unattended vehicles as temperatures can become fatal in minutes.

The hot, dry weather will also increase the risk of fires in the mountains, valleys and deserts throughout the week.
