Texas Longhorns overtake Georgia Bulldogs to lead AP Top 25 for first time in 16 years

CNN

After their 56-7 victory over the UTSA Roadrunners on Saturday night, the Texas Longhorns are the top-ranked college football team for the first time in 16 years.

The Longhorns overtook the Georgia Bulldogs for the top spot in the AP Top 25 after Kirby Smart’s team struggled to a 13-12 victory over the Kentucky Wildcats. It’s the first time this season that a team other than the Bulldogs has topped the rankings.

Texas last held this position in the 2008 season, but was finally pushed out of first place after three weeks with a last-second 39-33 loss to rival Texas Tech.

Of the 63 sportswriters and commentators who cast their votes this weekend, 35 saw Texas in the lead, while 23 put the Bulldogs in first place.

Elsewhere in the rankings, the Ohio State Buckeyes remain in third place despite not playing this weekend, and their 56-0 victory over the Western Michigan Broncos appears to have stuck in the minds of the five who voted them No. 1.

The biggest gains were made by the Miami Hurricanes, who moved up two spots to 8th with their 62-0 win over the Ball State Cardinals, and the Northern Illinois Huskies, who moved up from 25th to 23rd thanks to their dramatic win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish last weekend.

The Penn State Nittany Lions dropped two spots to 10th, likely due in part to an off week.

Texas led UTSA 14-0 when quarterback Quinn Ewers left the field with an abdominal injury, setting the stage for the substitution of Arch Manning, the nephew of Peyton and Eli Manning.

The backup quarterback threw for four touchdowns and ran 67 yards for a fifth, the longest run by a Texas quarterback since Vince Young ran 80 yards for a touchdown nearly 20 years ago.

“When the adrenaline kicks in, it helps you run a little faster,” Manning said after the game, according to AP. “It helps when you have great players around you and good coaches.”

Isaiah Bond of the Texas Longhorns catches a pass and runs for a touchdown during the second half against the UTSA Roadrunners.

Meanwhile, Bulldogs running back Trevor Etienne had to return to the field after a shoulder injury to help them over the finish line against Kentucky. Trailing 9-6 at the start of the fourth quarter, Etienne drove 50 yards before Branson Robinson scored the game-winning touchdown.

Although Georgia’s 13-12 victory was its 42nd consecutive regular season win, it was not enough for the Dawgs to remain at the top of the AP rankings.
