Podcast advertising generates as much attention as television advertising

  • New Podcast The daily book club is by Otis Gray: It is a daily show from the creator of Sleepywith a chapter of a classic story each day. The podcast’s daily content is created using his own cloned voice, which ElevenLabs uses: The use of AI is not mentioned in the audio, and is coyly described in the show description as “voice replication.” We asked Otis: He told Podnews that after testing with listeners, he “told them it was AI and asked if they had a problem with it. Much to my surprise, nobody did. They didn’t feel cheated. They just wanted more content, and they knew it was coming from me.” He added: “If listeners think they’re listening to Otis, then that’s totally fine.”

  • The Boston Globe Earlier this year, the company hired three people to start a weekly podcast, but then changed its mind and has no plans to launch the show. Two people are reportedly being paid while they look for other jobs within the company. The show’s producer has been brought in to write a newsletter. (Thoughts and prayers.)

  • Free money! Everyone hear is a free email newsletter that includes available grants, calls for podcast pitches, residencies, and awards and has nearly 4,500 subscribers. The August issue featured 115 different opportunities around the world. Subscribe here.

  • According to Listen Notes, July saw the lowest number of “new podcasts” this year—more than 60% less than last year. Technically, the number refers to “new feeds”; many new podcasts were launched on defunct feeds for discontinued shows. Production of new podcast episodes is declining: According to Podcast Index (see last month’s technical stuff), that’s only a 6% year-over-year decline.

  • Headliner has announced a collaboration with Canva to provide more sophisticated design features for audiograms.

  • Pocket Casts will add the ability to rate podcasts in the next version of its iOS app (v7.70). Listeners must listen to two or more episodes to be able to vote.
