The memorial in Shattuck Park in Neenah, shown here in an architectural rendering, will feature flags of the six branches of the U.S. military.

NEENAH – The American Legion Post 33 has launched a campaign to raise funds for a $140,000 memorial featuring the service flag in Shattuck Park.

The project will renovate and integrate the Armed Forces Memorial already in the park, add flagpoles and flags for the six branches of the U.S. military – Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy and Space Force – and erect new flagpoles for the existing U.S., Wisconsin and POW/MIA flags.

The City of Neenah will contribute $40,000 under its 2024-2028 capital plan, requiring $100,000 to be raised by American Legion Post 33.

Parks and Recreation Area Director Mike Kading said the plan is for the flag memorial to be completed by Veterans Day on Nov. 11, 2025.

“I think it’s a great addition to the park system,” Kading told The Post-Crescent. “Every November 11th, we have a Veterans Day commemoration at Shattuck Park.”

Dave Mix, a member of Post 33, said the memorial will have a colored concrete base and two plaques commemorating donors.

Contributions to the project can be sent to the American Legion Post 33, PO Box 632, Neenah, WI 54956.

Kading said Miron Construction has offered to provide in-kind services such as labor and equipment for the monument.

The Parks and Recreation Commission late last year approved a cost-sharing agreement with American Legion Post 33 for maintenance of the memorial. It states that veterans will be responsible for replacing the six service flags and the city will be responsible for replacing the U.S., Wisconsin and POW/MIA flags.

The veterans are also responsible for maintaining the donor boards.
