Nebraska is new number 1 in the Power 10 rankings in women’s volleyball

After a crazy first week, let’s break down my Power 10, including key matchups on Monday night when Minnesota beat Texas and Stanford defeated Wisconsin.

🏐 MORE COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL FOR WOMEN 🏐

1. Nebraska

One week into the season, we already have a new No. 1. Nebraska takes over the top spot after Texas suffered its first loss. The Huskers are 3-0 with their best win of the season opener against Kentucky. We saw excellent defense as expected, but also great performance from the middle with Bekka Allick and Andi Jackson. Even though there were more offensive errors against TCU, this team is still No. 1 for me right now.

2. Louisville

At number 2, I have the Cardinals. Overall, I’m really impressed with this Louisville unit and their talent. They seem to be in good shape this early in the season, with a four-set win over Wisconsin and a sweep of Tennessee. I think this team has all the right things right now.

3. Pittsburgh

Another impressive start to the season, with the Panthers sweeping Oregon. Rachel Fairbanks posted two consecutive double-doubles.

4. Stanford

Stanford is ranked 4th for me. Overall, I’m really impressed with the Cardinals after losing a lot of talent last season. Elia Rubin was a superstar both offensively and defensively. Rubin is like another libero in the back row and she fills that important role really well. Sami Francis was also impressive and Kami Miner orchestrated the offense beautifully for two big ranked wins. Those were gutsy performances – and this is a top-4 team from the start.

5. Texas

The Longhorns fall back to five for me, although I hate putting them that low so early in the season. We saw Texas use both setters, Ella Swindle and Averi Carlson. Madi Skinner continues to be unreal and Emma Halter made it look easy back there. Texas suffered a tough loss to Minnesota in five, but the Gophers are a good team with nothing to lose. Texas is still a top-five team and definitely a title contender.

6. Penn State

Penn State is ranked No. 6 after a 2-0 start and a win over Tennessee. Camryn Hannah and Jess Mruzik each had 19 kills in the win, while Izzy Starck had a promising debut as a setter, recording 42 assists and 12 digs as Penn State posted a .343 hitting average as a team.

7.Purdue

Purdue is ranked 7th after a 3-0 start. The Boilermakers didn’t have as strong a schedule as many top-10 teams to start with, but they showed a really efficient offensive performance. Eva Hudson and Chloe Chicoine are already showing their strengths at the pins and they’re also productive in the middle.

8. Florida

The Gators are off to a 3-0 start despite lingering injuries. Alexis Stucky isn’t back yet and Kennedy Martin had to leave the game against Colorado State with an injury. But Florida still got the next two wins without them. Isabel Martin has been a great backup and I can’t take her down because of an injury when they’ve still been getting wins.

9. Minnesota

How about a warm welcome to Minnesota? What a weekend for the Gophers. They showed us that this is not the team from last year. Yes, we lost some players, but we are better than ever. They had a tough schedule as almost everyone considered them underdogs, facing two top-5 teams and the No. 1 team in the country – and they came through.

Minnesota lost to Stanford in five games, but the Gophers hit .302 in the game and honestly gave up a lot of points on service errors, which can be fixed in the future. Then they beat the best team in the nation in five games. Julia Hanson had a double-double with 19 kills. Mckenna Wucherer was great and Melani Shaffmaster, who has been healthy this season, was just phenomenal. This team is a force to be reckoned with.

10. Kentucky

And finally, Kentucky at No. 10. The Wildcats lost to Nebraska in four sets and then picked up three wins this weekend. The competition wasn’t as tough in terms of wins, but Brooklyn DeLeye is already proving to be one of the best shooters in the country this season.

Wisconsin drops out

Wisconsin falls just short. I almost kept them at No. 10, and obviously I see so much potential in this team. They had big plans coming into the year. They have a freshman setter who I know can be a superstar this season. Once they get it right, I think they can get back to the top five in no time. But right now, after an 0-3 start, I had to reward teams with results that are ahead of them.
