For most MLB teams, the regular season is over and they know whether or not postseason baseball is in their future.

But for the NL East rivals New York Mets and Atlanta Braves, a doubleheader on Monday will decide the postseason fate of three teams, while the Arizona Diamondbacks will be watching closely.

The American League round is set, but the National League wild card is limited to the final two games of the regular season between the Mets and Braves, which are a doubleheader due to the impact of Hurricane Helene in the southeastern United States .

After these three teams played on Sunday, we now know the scenarios each team needs to reach the postseason.

Sunday’s games set everything in motion as the Atlanta Braves lost to the Kansas City Royals, an AL wild card team, while the Mets defeated the NL Central champion Milwaukee Brewers and the Diamondbacks defeated the San Diego Padres, who have a NL Wild Card.

So that was the “chaos scenario” as none of the three teams were able to secure a postseason spot, meaning everything depends on what happens in those two games on Monday.

First, for the Mets and Braves, a win in either game means they get to play baseball in October. So even if the Mets or Braves lose Game 1 on Monday, there’s still a chance to continue this season in Game 2.

In the meantime, the Diamondbacks will be looking to whoever wins Game 1, as they need a win from both teams to have a chance to defend their National League pennant from a season ago.

There was a world this weekend in which if the Mets won at least two of three games against the Brewers, they wouldn’t have to endure a road doubleheader to determine their playoff spot. And while the Braves took two of three hits from the Royals, a clean sweep would have meant the doubleheader would have been moot unless they tried to stop their division rival from breaking through.

But the Mets and Braves are in a position that is the envy of the Diamondbacks — neither team wants its playoff fate in the hands of two other teams.

In game one, the Mets will turn to Tylor Megill to start the game on the mound, while Spencer Wechselbach will opt for the Braves.

Game 2 isn’t set yet for either side, but the Braves have their star, Chris Sale, ready if they need him to pitch. If the Braves win Game 1, Sale will likely be waived for Game 1 of the Wild Card Series later this week.
