Live score updates, highlights and analysis for Detroit Lions vs. Arizona Cardinals

The morning games were not particularly positive for the Detroit Lions. Both the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings won by a wide margin, putting the Packers at 2-1 and the Vikings at 3-0.

At 1-1, Detroit won’t be able to move to the top of the NFC North by the end of Week 3, but they don’t want to fall two games behind. Between them and a 2-1 start to the season is the Arizona Cardinals, who are also 1-1. The Cardinals have one of the best and most entertaining offenses in the league after two weeks, which should give Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn a lot to work with.

But this week in Detroit, it was all about the offense. What was a top-five offense for two straight seasons has turned into a disappointing unit after two games. It’s way too early to panic, but the rust needs to be knocked off sooner rather than later. As coach Dan Campbell has been preaching all offseason, it’s going to be harder for Detroit to get to where they were last year this year. Given the strength of the division, that already seems to be true. Detroit can’t let that happen because of its own mistakes.

So can the offense turn things around and the defense keep Kyler Murray in check? This post will provide live updates on the Week 3 game, including highlights, drive-by-drive analysis, scoring updates, and anything else you might be interested in. Just stick around, refresh the page after the game starts at 4:25 p.m. ET, and enjoy the updates.

See you at kick-off.

First quarter

The Cardinals won the coin toss and gave up the ball, giving Detroit’s offense its first chance of the game. The Lions relied heavily on offense early in the game, using Dan Skipper as their sixth offensive player. It worked early, with 16 yards of groundwork from David Montgomery on two runs. Then Jared Goff found Sam LaPorta for 12 yards on a third-and-6 attempt to keep the drive alive and advance into Cardinals territory. Two consecutive throws to Brock Wright put Detroit on the edge of the red zone. It took just three more runs from Montgomery to get into the end zone and give Detroit an early 7:0 Lions lead.

On the second play of Arizona’s opening drive, Lions defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike went down with a lower-body injury. Meanwhile, Kyler Murray got into field goal position thanks to a planned 12-yard run followed by a 16-yard pass to Marvin Harrison Jr. A holding penalty couldn’t stop Arizona, as Murray ran just 21 yards on the following play to get into the red zone. A few plays later, Murray found Harrison again for a 10-yard touchdown. 7:7 draw.

During this trip, Terrion Arnold was hit in the knee. His return is officially questionable due to a knee injury.

Detroit’s offense immediately went back to work and showed a good balance of runs and passes. Two passes to Amon-Ra St. Brown totaling 31 yards brought Detroit within field goal range at the end of the first quarter.

Second quarter

On a third-and-short, an inside run to Jahmyr Gibbs scored 14 points and brought the Lions to the Cardinals’ 9-yard line for first-and-goal. Three plays later, Goff found St. Brown for a 5-yard touchdown and a 13-7 Lions Lead. Jake Bates missed the extra point.
