Film “Moon” comes to the Opera House | News, Sports, Jobs

“Fly Me to the Moon” will be performed at the Opera House on Saturday and Tuesday.

The cinema series at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center continues with “Fly me to the moon.”

The film will be shown Saturday and Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Commissioned to improve NASA’s public image, the film is in hot water when marketing expert Kelly Jones (Scarlett Johansson) makes launch director Cole Davis’ (Channing Tatum) already difficult job even worse. When the White House deems the mission too important to fail, Jones is ordered to stage a fake landing on the moon as a backup, and the countdown begins for real.

Financial Times names the film “A tribute to the romantic comedies of a time before the term was invented, the powder-pink era of Doris Day.” The Chicago Sun-Times says “With the good, old-fashioned chemistry of a first-class movie star, ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ is a hit from the start.” Variety says the film is “rigorously researched and cleverly structured, using forgotten or little-known aspects of the (moon) mission in unexpected ways.” MovieMom calls it “insightful, witty and wise.”

Rated PG-13 due to strong language and smoking. “Fly me to the moon” lasts two hours and 12 minutes. Tickets are available at the box office for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors and Opera House members), and $5 (students). The Opera House is equipped with assistive listening devices for the hearing impaired. Simply request them from an usher or staff member.

The Opera House Cinema Series is generously sponsored by Lake Shore Savings Bank. In addition, the Opera House program is made possible by the United Arts Appeal of Chautauqua County. The 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center is a member-supported nonprofit performing arts center with the mission to “to present the performing arts for the benefit of our community and region…to provide access to artistic diversity…and high-quality programs at an affordable price.” It is located in the Village Hall in downtown Fredonia.
