In early August, over 3,200 Boone County residents applied for the Senior Real Estate Tax Relief Program.

According to a press release from the Boone County Commission, many applications were submitted between July 1 and August 13, and more people can apply through September.

“Boone County Tax Collector Brian McCollum and the Tax Collector’s Office team have done an incredible job of getting a complex program up and running and streamlining it in its first month of operation. They have been very helpful in answering seniors’ questions, assisting with the application process, and moving many applicants through the process quickly,” said Boone County County Commissioner Kip Kendrick.

Boone County advises that taxpayers eligible for these tax breaks must meet the following requirements:

• 62 years or older before January 1 of the first credit year
• A registered owner of his or her primary residence or holder of a legal or equitable interest in that primary residence as evidenced by a written document
• Responsible for paying property taxes on this homestead

Applications must be submitted before the October 1 deadline. Completed, notarized applications and other required documents must be submitted to the Boone County Collector’s Office Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Applications may also be mailed to the Collector’s Office at 801 E. Walnut, Room 118, Columbia, MO 65201.

Applicants will be notified of approval or rejection within 30 days.
