New waterfront pedestrian walkway to be built near the United Nations in New York City

Ten years after the plan was first presented to the public, the city has officially announced that it will begin work on a pedestrian walkway on the East River Greenway through the United Nations.

According to Gothamist, which first reported the news, the expansion will be built on piers on the waterway between East 41st and East 53rd Streets.

As New Yorkers may recall, another section of the trail opened to the public last year. The East Midtown Greenway, which runs between 53rd and 61st streets, currently effectively ends at the United Nations, a situation that this latest development seeks to improve.

The city’s economic development agency has already launched a call for contractors for the nearly 1.6-kilometer-long new esplanade, which is scheduled to open to the public at the end of 2028.

Even better, this $120 million project is part of a larger plan to build a 32-mile trail along the river. It will take some time, but we’re getting there.

This isn’t the only pedestrian-friendly design the city has had recently. Last year, 40 blocks of Third Avenue were given new bike and bus lanes. A few months later, a 10-foot-wide bike lane opened on Tenth Avenue.

Will New York, often referred to as the “Royal City of Bicycles,” soon become the Amsterdam of the USA? We certainly hope so.
