Construction noise led to shootings

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to reflect new information.

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) – Construction noise prompted a curfew at East Tennessee State University (ETSU) on Tuesday, and gunshots were reported.

The university had previously issued a warning that an armed person was on campus around 9:30 a.m. Students and faculty were asked to avoid the area around Sam Wilson Hall because shots had been fired.

An ETSU spokesperson confirmed to News Channel 11 that no shots were fired on campus and that the noise was from construction equipment. According to the spokesperson, there is no danger to the campus.

The all-clear was given at 9:35 a.m.

ETSU President Brian Noland issued a statement himself later Tuesday morning, saying that operations had resumed as usual after the all-clear was given.

Noland thanked the Sam Wilson Hall faculty and staff for their actions in the face of the obvious threat and also mentioned the quick response of ETSU Public Safety.

“Although this incident turned out to be a false alarm, I am very proud of the campus and the way everyone quickly responded to the alarm,” Noland wrote. “Today’s incident was a reminder of how important it is to be informed about how each of us should respond in an emergency situation. Your alertness and quick response are critical in situations like this.”

Noland urged everyone on campus to sign up for alerts by downloading the ETSU Safe app.

According to Noland, counseling services are also available at the Counseling Center on the third floor of the Culp Student Center for anyone who needs them.
