Zach Bryan posts about Taylor Swift and Kanye West and apologizes

After incurring Swiftie’s ire, Zach Bryan knows the dangers of drinking and posting all too well.

The 28-year-old country star released a lengthy apology on Thursday after facing backlash for a post on X in which he claimed Ye, formerly Kanye West, was better than Taylor Swift. In Tuesday’s brief X post, he also said the Philadelphia Eagles are superior to the Kansas City Chiefs, the team where Swift’s boyfriend Travis Kelce plays.

“Eagles > Chiefs,” Bryan wrote in his original X-post, according to screenshots shared by Variety and Rolling Stone. “Kanye > Taylor. Who’s on my side?”

The singer of “Something in the Orange” has since deactivated his X account. However, on Thursday he apologized for the message in his Instagram story.

“To the record people: I wasn’t here for Taylor the other day,” he wrote. “I was drunkenly comparing two records and it came out wrong. I know there’s a lot of stuff revolving around Ye and I was speaking purely musically.”

He continued, “I love Taylor’s music and pray you know that I’m only human and often tweet stupid things. Hopefully one day I can explain that to her. Twitter gets me in trouble too often and I’d say it’s best if I stay away from it. I’m sorry to any Taylor fans I’ve upset or disappointed.”

Swift famously has a long-running feud with Ye and his ex-wife Kim Kardashian, dating back to when the “Stronger” rapper interrupted Swift’s speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards to declare that Beyoncé should have won the award for Best Female Video. In 2016, a dispute over whether Swift approved of a controversial lyric about her in Ye’s song “Famous” led to the pop star’s “Reputation” era. It also seemed to inspire two songs on her latest album, “The Tortured Poets Department.”

In 2022, Ye faced widespread criticism after making a series of anti-Semitic comments, including telling controversial talk show host Alex Jones that he liked Hitler. The rapper said he saw “good things” about the Nazi leader who led the extermination of six million Jews in the Holocaust. Ye apologized to “the Jewish community for any unintentional outburst caused by my words or actions” last year.

Zach Bryan releases completely self-produced album: “I put everything I could into it”

In his apology on Instagram, Bryan told his fans that he had been “going through a rough time” lately and that he had “projected a little” with his post about Swift, which he said seemed “rude and desensitized” to her.

“I respect her so much as a musician that I definitely don’t want people to think I don’t appreciate and love what she has done for music,” he wrote. “Okay, that’s it!”

But after warning his fans not to “drink and tweet,” Bryan followed up with another slide showing him listening to Swift’s song “Castles Crumbling” on Spotify.

“I’m not trying to save face here, but Taylor has been a force of nature since we all grew up and I admire that,” he said. “I’m going to listen to that record now. I never want people to think I’m even remotely mean or nasty to anyone, that’s why I’m saying all this.”

In a final message, Bryan summed up that “this year has been very demanding for me personally,” and vowed to “take a breather from stupid tweeting, finish my tour, and somehow ground myself in the midst of all this.”

Last year, Bryan was arrested in Oklahoma for obstructing an investigation. In a video shared on social media, he said he was “too cheeky” toward a police officer after his security guard was pulled over. The singer admitted he was “a jerk” and acted like a “real kid” during the encounter.

“I will take the blame for this,” he said. “I am a grown man and I should not have behaved like that.”
