Zach Bryan apologizes to Swifties for drunkenly posting “Kanye > Taylor” and deactivates his X-Account

Country superstar Zach Bryan is in trouble with Taylor Swift’s fan base after he drunkenly posted on X that he preferred Kanye “Ye” West over her.

The article from Tuesday evening said:

“Eagle > Chiefs

Kanye > Taylor

who is with me”

The post also disparaged the Kansas City Chiefs, the football team owned by Swift’s boyfriend Travis Kelce. The post has since been deleted and Bryan has deactivated his X-account entirely.

Before he left, Bryan tried to save his reputation by posting, “Guys I love Taylor, was listening to TTPD (‘The Tortured Poets Department’) last night and thank you, Aimee came over and I drunk tweeted this about Kanye. If anyone was serious, please know that I love both artists very much and think we are in a really beautiful time in music.”

The song he was referring to, “Thank You Aimee,” is perceived as a diss track aimed at West’s ex-wife Kim Kardashian, who became embroiled in the long-running feud between Swift and West in 2017. A notable line is, “One day your child is going to come home singing a song that only the two of us will know is about you.” Kardashian and her daughter North West have posted videos of Swift singing songs.

Despite banning himself from X, Bryan remains active on Instagram. Very active. Early Thursday morning, he took to the platform and attempted to make peace in a series of four Instagram Story posts.

The first reads: “To the record people: I wasn’t here for Taylor the other day. I was drunk comparing two records and it came out wrong. I know there are a lot of things floating around Ye and I was speaking purely musically. I love Taylor’s music and pray you know I’m human and often tweet stupid things. Hopefully I can explain that to her one day. Twitter gets me in trouble too often and I’d say it’s best if I stay away from it. I’m sorry to any Taylor fans I’ve upset or disappointed. I love you and I’m doing my best!”

In a second post, he apologized, citing his own champagne issues: “I’ve been going through a rough time in my life and I think I was projecting a bit. To be completely honest, it just came across as rude and desensitized to Taylor. I respect her so much as a musician that I definitely don’t want people to think I don’t appreciate and love what she’s done as a musician. Okay, that’s it! I love you guys and hope you understand. Don’t drink and don’t tweet. Don’t drink and don’t tweet!!”

But it didn’t stop there. A third story post read: “Not to save face here but Taylor has always been a force of nature since we all grew up and I admire that. I’m going to listen to that record now” – referring to an image of her song “Castles Crumbling” included in the post. “I never want people to think I have even the slightest hint of malice or meanness towards anyone, ever, that’s why I’m saying all this. Have the best day ever everyone, I love you.”

And to close out this manuscript, Bryan posted, “This year has been very challenging for me in personal ways that no one knows about and I’ve been trying to deal with and juggle too many things at once. So I’m going to take a break from tweeting stupid stuff, finish my tour and kind of ground myself in the midst of all of this. I feel very, very blessed every day. It’s been so important to me not to take it for granted and to hold on to it. Okay, I had to get this off my chest, you guys are the best and see you at Bourbon and Beyond” (a festival happening in Kentucky right now).

While these lengthy apologies suggest that Bryan has become a tortured poet himself, he has praised Swift in the past. Hours before the release, he tweeted enthusiastically in support of her 2022 album “Midnights,” writing, “Miss Swift what’s the mood at midnight good morning everyone and happy almost weekend come on in we’re leaving crying.”

He also responded to a fan’s question about his favorite Swift song: “August, for sure.” He said his girlfriend asked him to sing Swift’s debut single, “Tim McGraw.”

The two stars are also neck and neck in the charts with their latest albums. Swift’s “The Tortured Poets Department” is at number 5 on the Billboard 200, Bryan’s “The Great American Bar Scene” is at number 7.

While Swift has not commented on the animosity, her and Bryan’s fans may be asking the following question regarding their favorite stars’ professional relationship: Is it over now?

Representatives for Bryan and Swift did not immediately respond to NBC News’ request for comment.
