A new milestone was reached for streaming services last month, according to newly released Nielsen ratings data.
In July, YouTube became the first streaming platform ever to account for over 10% of total TV usage. Month-over-month, YouTube usage increased by 7%, accounting for 10.4% of total TV usage for the month.
Overall, streaming continues to show remarkable strength, accounting for 41.4% of TV usage, while broadcast and cable TV usage continues to decline. In July 2023, linear TV usage (broadcast/cable) fell below 50% for the first time, and a year later it continues to decline, accounting for 46.7% of usage in July 2024.
In terms of total TV viewership, YouTube still ranks second behind The Walt Disney Company, which has the advantage of broadcast (ABC) and cable (ESPN, Disney Channel) as well as multiple streaming platforms (Disney+, Hulu). However, YouTube as a pure streaming platform is doing remarkably well, trailing Disney by less than one percent in June, the most recent month for which Nielsen released data. Check out the breakdown below:
Last month, House of the Dragon on Max was the top program with 4.7 billion viewing minutes, closely followed by the animation show Bluish on Disney+ with 4.3 billion viewing minutes. Prime Videos The boys came in third place with 4.2 billion viewing minutes.
