The 2024 Dublin Horse Show begins on Wednesday and will be broadcast live on television on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Highlights of the nearly 168 classes and competitions include the Nations Cup of Ireland (the Aga Khan Trophy) on Friday, the Defender Puissance on Saturday and the Rolex Grand Prix of Ireland on Sunday (with prize money of €500,000). – RTÉ, Friday-Sunday

Ride a bike

The riders of the 22 teams taking part in the 2024 Vuelta a España begin their three-week journey through Portugal and Spain this weekend, starting in Lisbon and spending the first three days in Portugal before the event moves across the border. One of cycling’s most prestigious Grand Tours, it will culminate in Madrid on Sunday 8 September. – Eurosport, starts Saturday (17 August)

The inaugural Women’s All-Island Cup took place last year, with Galway United beating Cliftonville 1-0 in the final. This season, 16 teams took part in the competition – 11 from the League of Ireland and five from the Northern Ireland Football League. The final this weekend will see the reigning champions take on Shamrock Rovers at Tallaght Stadium. – Saturday, TG4
