Your Pixel phone may have to wait longer for Android 15

Aside from the odd Android 12 release, Google tends to update its Pixel lineup to the latest version of Android on the same day the source code is released. They’ve done this for Android 14 and 13 and 11 and 10, etc. For Android 15, they may go the way of Android 12 and not everyone else.

According to a new rumor, Google plans to release the source code of Android 15 next week in September, but may not release Android 15 for the Pixel lineup until October, possibly even mid-October. The alleged reasoning is that they want to give the Android team time to improve stability before it becomes stable.

If we look at a calendar, this schedule would mean that Android 15 source code will appear in early September, but no Pixel device will receive the update for at least a month.

Is that a cause for concern? Well, no. If Google needs time to avoid releasing a buggy mess for all of its Pixel phones, including the new Pixel 9 lineup, we shouldn’t freak out. If anything, it’s just…strangeWe’re so used to Google giving us the news right away that we might be in a state of confusion until the update arrives. At least we’ve got the Pixel 9 to play with, right?

Android 15 is a pretty big update, but it’s not a massive overhaul of Android either. There are several new features to look forward to, but nothing I’d call groundbreaking.

On a related note, Google is already letting us test Android 15 QPR1 in beta, a newer version than the one that will land on phones when Android 15 becomes stable. This probably makes the whole situation even more awkward, but that’s how Google works now when it comes to Android 15 and betas. Not only are they letting us test new versions of Android, but they’re also giving us access to quarterly builds several months before they become stable.

We will let you know what it’s about early next week.
