Your own personalized “SportsCenter”? ESPN is working on it for upcoming streaming service

BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) — ESPN is considering using artificial intelligence to create personalized “SportsCenter” broadcasts for subscribers of its flagship streaming service, which is expected to launch in fall 2025, the network’s CEO said Wednesday.

The idea is one of several currently in the works and discussed at a press conference by ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro, including a “Where to Watch the Shows” guide that premiered Wednesday on ESPN.com and the ESPN app.

The personalized “SportsCenter” is reminiscent of a popular variant that NBC Sports offered during the Olympic Games via its streaming service Peacock: Using the voice of sports reporter Al Michaels, highlight packages were put together that were tailored to individual interests.

ESPN has released few other details about how it is working to do something similar for its signature highlights show. The flagship streaming service is expected to include much of the programming from ESPN’s main channel and some other offshoots, and will be aimed at people who have canceled their cable or satellite TV subscriptions.

The Where to Watch feature is designed to be an easy-to-use guide for sports fans to find out where to watch every sporting event on ESPN platforms and beyond, including broadcast, cable and regional sports networks and streaming services.

“Simplifying the discovery of sporting events and where a fan can watch them has become increasingly important as sports television has become fragmented across different networks and platforms,” said Brian Marshall, vice president of sports products and technology at Disney Entertainment and ESPN.

ESPN said the service is designed to allow fans to customize their searches to prioritize their favorite teams and sports. Fans can use the service to click through to events if they are pay-TV or ESPN+ subscribers. Some partner networks, including NESN and Monumental Sports, will also be included.

Pitaro said ESPN has spoken to various leagues and commissioners about whether ESPN streaming could be a possible solution for struggling regional sports networks to bring a particular team’s games to their fans.

“We want to at least be part of the solution here,” said Pitaro.

Venu Sports, ESPN’s streaming partnership with Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery that was set to offer live sports coverage in the fall, has been put on hold after a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order earlier this month following a lawsuit filed by FuboTV, accusing Venu Sports’ operators of violating antitrust laws.

“We disagree with the court’s decision,” Pitaro said, adding that ESPN believes it offers consumers another option.

ESPN also announced on Wednesday that It has extended a rights contract with the US Tennis Association This would ensure coverage of the US Open on the network, ABC and streaming services until 2037.
