Your kick-off on Saturday: Is LA Galaxy in danger of losing the top spot in the West?

All MLS games are worth watching. Some are even more worth watching.

The Watchgridometer helps you plan your weekend by assigning a potential watchability score to each game. A 50/50 game has the potential to be the “best game ever.” Games are ranked in order of their broadcast slot. We’ve reached the point in the season where games also have a “playoff score.” 50/50 means the game will be won or sent home on decision day.

Columbus Crew vs Orlando City SC

Orlando City passed the midweek test against Charlotte with ease. They are now fourth in the East and are the only team outside the top three of the conference that is in consistently positive form. However…

They still have a lot to prove. The win against Charlotte midweek could be their most important victory of the season. Charlotte has looked awful in the last few games and is in danger of falling to a wildcard spot. It is the Lions’ only win against a team currently ranked higher than eighth in their conference.

So, yes. Columbus is a completely different challenge. One that the Lions weren’t up to this year. But this is a team with a lot of confidence now and perhaps the East’s best hope of challenging the conference’s top three in the playoffs. A win for Orlando tonight would change a lot of things.

Real Salt Lake vs Portland Timbers

Playoffocity score: 44/50

Please make sure that your helmet and seat belt are tight beforehand.

RSL’s high-flying attack and Portland’s even higher-flying attack, led by one of the most prolific attacking trios we’ve ever seen in MLS, should result in constant “call the police because your neighbors shot at them so close to your house” level fireworks.

Beyond that, there’s a lot at stake. RSL has fought its way to second place in the West, and the Timbers are still within touching distance of a playoff spot at home, although they’re currently stuck in eighth place.

LA Galaxy vs Vancouver Whitecaps FC
WATCH: Apple TV – MLS Season Pass; TSN, RDS 2 | Saturday, 10:30 p.m. ET
Viewability rating: 40/50
Playoffocity score: 44/50

The Galaxy are not out of the woods yet. They still stand alone atop the West, but Wednesday’s loss to Portland left the door open for teams like RSL, LAFC and… Vancouver?

The Whitecaps are far away, but have two games less than the Galaxy. A win in those two games would put them three points behind the Galaxy after 30 games. A late rise to the top is unlikely, but not impossible. The “Caps” have to win tonight, though.

The Galaxy need to win to avoid the confusion of them trouncing LAFC for one half and then losing two games in a row.

New York City FC vs Inter Miami CF

Playoffocity score: 27/50

The Herons are now really just playing for the points record. To do that, they need to get 11 points in their last five games. The bad news is that one of those games is at Yankee Stadium. The good news is that we’re having a hard time keeping track of all the losses happening in New York right now. NYCFC are either the one with the eight-game winless streak or the one who has won two of their last 15 games in all competitions. I’m pretty sure they’re the one with the eight-game winless streak, but to be honest, it all kind of mixes together. Either way, there were a lot of opportunities for NYCFC to grab the final playoff spot in the East and they didn’t capitalize on any of them. Maybe a big game will wake them up.

Colorado Rapids vs Toronto FC
WATCH: Apple TV – Free | Saturday, 9:30 p.m. ET
Viewability rating: 28/50
Playoffocity score: 35/50

Toronto isn’t “good,” but they find a way to win games from time to time. A win could get them out of a wild card spot. The Rapids are “good,” but still managed to get beaten by Sporting KC during the week. They need to bounce back here. Either they make it or they lose their home playoff spot.

Philadelphia Union vs DC United
WATCH: Apple TV – Free, FS1, FOX Deportes, TSN | Sunday, 6:15 p.m. ET
Viewability rating: 30/50
Playoffocity score: 37/50

These two have identical records. However, the Union are in the last playoff spot in the East thanks to goal differential. It’s a true six-point game and both teams are playing their best game of the season. The Union especially. It could be fun and carries some weight for those of us betting on the wild card spots.

Charlotte FC vs New England Revolution

Viewability rating: 23/50
Playoffocity score: 30/50

Charlotte has been so bad with their new DPs on the roster. It was really amazing to see them not only winless in their last three games, but losing to some bad teams in the process. They need this. Badly. They are in real danger of getting a wild card spot.

New York Red Bulls vs Atlanta United
WATCH: Apple TV – MLS Season Pass | Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET
Viewability rating: 22/50
Playoffocity score: 33/50

My goodness, how grateful are the Red Bulls to have Atlanta United on the schedule twice in the next few weeks? The Red Bulls have won their last 15 games twice in all competitions and need to get back on track before the playoffs. Then comes Atlanta, a team they simply can’t beat. The Five Stripes have one (1) regular season win against New York in the entire club’s history.

CF Montréal vs Chicago Fire FC

I mean, technically they could find a way to the playoffs.

Nashville SC vs FC Cincinnati
WATCH: Apple TV – MLS Season Pass | Saturday, 8:30 p.m. ET
Viewability rating: 28/50
Playoffocity score: 29/50

It will be really interesting to see how Nashville looks against Cincy. Nashville has been playing well…or at least with more entertainment value lately. It seems like some of BJ Callaghan’s ideas are working. Is that enough to challenge Cincy?

(Probably not, but still)

Austin FC vs Houston Dynamo FC
WATCH: Apple TV – MLS Season Pass | Saturday, 8:30 p.m. ET
Viewability rating: 27/50
Playoffocity score: 28/50

A rivalry game that’s also a business game for Houston. They need to get it done against an uninspiring Austin team or risk losing a wild card spot. But a win? A win could secure them a playoff spot at home. The West is weird.

FC Dallas vs LAFC
WATCH: Apple TV – MLS Season Pass | Saturday, 8:30 p.m. ET
Viewability rating: 25/50
Playoffocity score: 27/50

LAFC hasn’t won any of its last four MLS games. Their chance of finishing top of the West is all but gone, and now their chance of a playoff spot at home is in doubt. It would take something spectacular to make them slip that far, but right now they’re not playing well. There are at least concerns about whether they can be at their best in the playoffs.

Sporting KC vs Minnesota United
WATCH: Apple TV – MLS Season Pass | Saturday, 8:30 p.m. ET
Viewability rating: 20/50
Playoffocity score: 22/50

Minnesota has a sizable lead over the final Wild Card spot, and a bad loss here to an SKC team that trounced Colorado during the week could potentially jeopardize that lead.

San Jose Earthquakes vs St. Louis CITY SC
WATCH: Apple TV – MLS Season Pass | Saturday, 10:30 p.m. ET

Only one of these teams is technically and mathematically eliminated from the play-off race.
