“You can rip this marriage ban out of my cold, dead, gay hand.”

“You can rip this marriage ban out of my cold, dead, gay hand.”

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel took the stage at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Wednesday and spoke about the freedoms Democrats have guaranteed by supporting the Harris-Walz campaign team.

Nessel, Michigan’s first openly gay attorney general, spoke about Vice President Kamala Harris’ history of supporting the LGBTQ community when she was California’s attorney general, noting that Harris refused to defend the state’s same-sex marriage ban in 2011. Nessel said she expects Harris to fight for the freedom of all Americans if she is elected president of the United States in November.

The Democratic National Committee convention is taking place in Chicago until Thursday. Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to officially accept the party’s nomination for the 2024 presidential election on November 5 on Thursday.

What you should know about Dana Nessel

  • Who is she? Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel was sworn in on January 1, 2019. Nessel, the state’s first openly gay attorney general, is a former criminal prosecutor and civil rights attorney who rose to prominence before taking office for winning a landmark court case that overturned Michigan’s ban on gay marriage.

  • What role it plays: Nessel, currently serving her second term as attorney general, spoke about the freedoms secured by Democrats, who secured her second term in 2022 after defeating a Michigan lawyer who led a crusade to challenge the 2020 election by nine percentage points.

  • Key quote: “Just as the ban on same-sex marriage was overturned in California, the ban on abortion was overturned in Michigan. By the way, I have a message for Republicans and the justices of the Supreme Court of the United States: You can rip this marriage ban out of my cold, dead, gay hand,” Nessel said. “I know that Kamala Harris, whether she is Attorney General or President of the United States, will always be on our side.”
