You can now add your Hawaiian driver’s license and ID card to your phone. Here’s how

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Credit cards, event tickets and airline boarding passes can be stored on your phone and easily accessed. And now, so can your Hawaii driver’s license and identification card.

Hawaii residents can now add their REAL ID-compliant Hawaii driver’s license or identification card to their iPhone or Apple Watch, the state Department of Transportation announced Wednesday.

Officials said residents would still need to carry their physical ID cards.

To use this feature, you need an iPhone 8 or later with iOS 16.5 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 4 or later with WatchOS 9.5 or later.

In Hawaii, digital driver’s licenses and state IDs are currently accepted in the following areas:

  • At the Transportation Security Administration checkpoint in Terminal 1
  • Apple Stores
  • In selected apps that require identity or age verification

Digital driving licenses may not be used as proof of name and address to comply with lawful orders from a police officer, the Ministry of Transport said.

To add a Hawaiian driver’s license and ID card to Apple Wallet:
  • Open the Wallet app on your iPhone.
  • Tap the Add (+) button.
  • Tap Driver’s License or State ID and select your state.
  • Choose whether you want to add your driver’s license or ID to just your iPhone or to both your iPhone and paired Apple Watch.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to scan the front and back of your driver’s license or ID card.
How to present a digital ID:

To present an ID in Apple Wallet, residents can simply hold their iPhone or Apple Watch to a reader. A resident’s device will then display what information is being requested. The requested information will not be released from a device until the resident authorizes the release using Face ID or Touch ID. Because the information is shared digitally, residents do not need to hand over their iPhone or Apple Watch to present an ID in Apple Wallet.

Enable acceptance of digital IDs for companies

Businesses can download and use a variety of apps such as Tap2iD Mobile, Veriscan and Mobile ID Verify to securely and confidentially accept mobile driver’s licenses and ID cards (including IDs in Apple Wallet) for in-person age verification.

Businesses that accept mobile driver’s licenses and IDs only receive the necessary age verification information, such as your ID photo and age. To further protect residents’ data, the app prevents businesses from saving the information or taking screenshots.

Security and privacy for IDs in Apple Wallet:

Apple Wallet provides a convenient and secure way to add and present a driver’s license or national ID using just an iPhone or Apple Watch, and uses the privacy and security features built into an Apple device to protect a user’s identity and personal information.

When you add an ID to Apple Wallet, the government issuing authority receives only the information it needs to approve or deny the addition of your ID to Apple Wallet.

Once the ID information is added to Apple Wallet, it is encrypted on the user’s device so that others, including Apple, cannot access it unless the user presents it. Apple and the government issuing agency do not know when or to whom you present your driver’s license or ID card.

The user’s ID presentation history is encrypted and stored only on their device. Apple does not store presentation information that can be associated with a user. When presenting a Hawaiian driver’s license and ID card in Apple Wallet, only the information required for the transaction is displayed. The user has the opportunity to review and authorize the requested information before it is shared.
