It turns out that YFN Lucci, former label mate of the late Rich Homie Quanis the victim of a false death rumor. TMZ reported that although there was a rumor on Wednesday (September 18) that Lucci – whose real name is Rayshawn Bennett – had died, this was nothing more than a “complete fabrication.”
The artist was sentenced to 10 years in prison in January following his RICO trial. He pleaded guilty to violating the Street Gang and Terrorism Prevention Act, nearly three years after being charged with gang violence, murder and organized crime in Atlanta.
Lucci’s lawyer Drew Findling to TMZ that his 33-year-old client is actually alive and was not killed in prison. Some believe the rumors were started to stir up emotions following the death of Rich Homie Quan earlier this month.
Quan, whose real name was Dequantes Lamar, was found dead in his home. He was only 34 years old and the cause of death has not yet been determined.
Lucci was just one of a dozen people charged as part of a sweeping indictment in April 2021 against alleged Bloods gang members. He was initially charged with murder in January 2021 after authorities said he was the driver in a gang-related drive-by shooting that left a man dead.
As part of his guilty plea, prosecutors dropped 12 of 13 charges against Lucci, and he pleaded guilty to only one count of violating the Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act. He could be released as early as January 2025, with his prison sentence counting as time already served.
In July, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis said that“The State has no objection to the release of Defendant Rayshawn Bennett.” This statement raised optimism among many regarding his release.
