Yellow Jackets shock No. 10 Florida State and start the season with 1-0

What a start to the season for Georgia Tech. They beat No. 10 Florida State and pulled off a major upset. Their offensive line was dominant, the running game was consistently excellent, and the defense showed it should be much better this season.

Georgia Tech proved a lot of people wrong again today. Yellow Jackets head coach Brent Key has had a lot of success as an underdog against ranked teams and continued that today. Georgia Tech’s offense seemed to run smoothly, the offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage and the defense looked much better. Georgia Tech beat Florida State 336-291 and defeated Florida State 190-98. That was the difference in the game. Georgia Tech had to beat Florida State at the line of scrimmage and that’s exactly what they did.

Jamal Haynes rushed for 75 yards on 11 carries, King rushed for 54 on 15 carries and Chad Alexander rushed for 41 yards on 7 carries. Malik Rutherford was Georgia Tech’s top receiver, catching four passes for 66 yards. Georgia Tech averaged 6.5 yards per play, while Florida State averaged 5.0.

Florida State’s running attack, which garnered a lot of attention before this game, was held to 3.2 yards per carry.

This is a huge win for the program. Things have improved under Key for the Yellow Jackets and while they still have a tough road ahead, this is a great start to the year. Now they have to handle the success and attention this game will bring and prepare to face Georgia State next weekend.
