“Yashasvi Jaiswal 100 times better than the overrated Shubman Gill”: Contrasting performance of the Indian batsmen causes Twitter to rage

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dream run in Test cricket continued as the young left-hander stood firm at one end even as wickets fell at the other end to keep India in the game in the first Test against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Reining in his natural instincts on a pitch that offered plenty of support to the seamers, with overcast conditions also helping them, Jaiswal reached his fifth half-century in just his 17th innings, adding to his three centuries, including two double hundreds.

He was the standout batsman for India on the opening day, as he has been since his debut in the West Indies last year. He is the fastest Indian to reach 1000 Test runs, and that too in just 9 Tests. The left-hander has already reached a stage where he is seen as a threat by the Australians, two months before his first tour Down Under.

However, the same cannot be said about another very young Indian batsman, Shubman Gill. The right-hander, who is considered to be the future leader of the Indian team, has not been able to translate his talent into consistent performance in cricket.

Gill averaged just 35 in his 25-match Test career. He started out as an opener, but in the same series that Jaiswal made his Test debut, he asked the team management for the third spot and got it in the post-Cheteshwar Pujara period. Although he scored a couple of centuries at home against England earlier this year while hitting that batting average, he has not quite reached his full potential.

Social media didn’t take long to remind him of this after he was sent off for a miscue on Thursday. Gill was choked on the leg side as he tried to clear a shot from Hasan Mahmud. The ball bounced off the inside edge of his bat and landed in the gloves of Bangladesh goalkeeper Litton Das.

This is how social media reacted to the different Test careers of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill

Ravindra Jadeja (7) and Ravichandran Ashwin (21) were at bat at tea. Jaiswal scored a solid 56 off 118 balls with nine fours, while pacer Hasan Mahmud (4/35) did the damage.

The performance of the Indian batting line-up was quite astonishing as, apart from the occasional difficult moments that are part and parcel of Test cricket, neither the pitch nor the bowlers posed any significant challenge.

But the home team’s batsmen just couldn’t beat them, as their dismissals seemed to be more the result of a lack of concentration.

The departure of Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant (39), who scored 62 runs for the fourth wicket in 99 balls, was proof of this.

Pant, who looked fluid in the opening session, played a weak shot outside off Mahmud to allow Litton Das an easy catch and take him to stumps, ending the first part of the left-hander’s return to Test cricket in the 83rd minute.

Jaiswal, India’s most commanding batsman that day, took his 50 off 95 balls when he forced Mehidy Hasan Miraz into a single and looked likely to score more.

But a sudden rush of blood overrode common sense as Jaiswal attempted a drive from Nahid Rana that went straight to Shadman Islam at first slip.

KL Rahul was bowled by off-spinner Mehidy for 16 as India crashed to 144 for six before Ashwin and Jadeja temporarily halted the freefall.
