Yankees’ new-look bullpen scores in victory

Luis Gil survived five innings of battling through traffic and allowing just one run. Long at-bats, five hits and two walks meant he recorded just 15 outs.

The Yankees’ revamped bullpen got the job done.

Luke Weaver and Jake Cousins accomplished most of the outs in a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Royals in 11 innings in the Bronx on Wednesday night.

“Bullpen was excellent,” manager Aaron Boone said after the group allowed two runs (one earned) in six strong innings.

The only earned run was scored by Clay Holmes, a former ninth-inning player who came on in the seventh inning and was unable to maintain his one-run lead because of the Royals’ ability to play small ball.

Kyle Isbel hit a single, advanced to second base on a single by Tommy Pham, advanced to third on a flyout by Bobby Witt Jr. and scored on a sacrifice fly by Salvador Perez.

That would be the most the group would go to.

After Holmes (who followed a scoreless frame by Tim Hill), Tommy Kahnle threw a perfect eighth inning.

Cousins got into a bit of trouble in the ninth inning when he allowed a walk to Pham with two outs and Witt got his turn on a strikeout, but escaped that trouble by intercepting Pham.

In the 10th inning, Cousins allowed an easy, decisive run—pinch-ghost runner Dairon Blanco stole third base and then scored on a wild pitch—before handing the ball off to Weaver, who was not touched again for the final 1 ²/₃ innings.

Two strikeouts in the 11th inning helped keep the Ghost Runner on track, and Weaver came off the mound full of energy.

“With the year he’s had, he’s getting more and more used to being part of these big moments,” Boone said of Weaver, who earned his fifth win of the season.

Gil, who escaped a difficult situation with the bases loaded and one out in the first inning, allowed only one earned run in five innings.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, his 16 starts with one or zero runs allowed are tied with Russ Ford (16 starts in 1910) as the Yankee rookie with the most runs allowed in franchise history.

Against an unusual and outstanding starting pitcher – All-Star Cole Ragan, a left-hander whose changeup is particularly difficult for right-handers – the Yankees opted for a couple of left-handers in a lineup that did not include Jasson Dominguez.

“The Martian,” who has gone 1-for-7 in two games since his promotion, sat on the bench in the third game while Alex Verdugo returned to left field.

Dominguez is a switch hitter who is much stronger as a left-hander.

In 54 appearances in the minors on the right side this season, he only achieved an OPS of .491.

Boone sent left-swinging Jazz Chisholm Jr., who hit the game-winning infield single in the 11th inning, to the net in the fourth and struck out Verdugo in the sixth.

“I wanted to have my left-handers on the team today,” Boone said. “I want Dugie to keep playing, and I wanted to have left-handers on the team today.”

Boone said Dominguez will play “a lot” after being called up on Monday.

But he also said there will be time for Verdugo, who was a below-average hitter from May to August but performed better in September.

After hitting 1 for 4 – and getting thrown out at second base while trying to turn his single into a double – Verdugo has a .313 batting average in nine games this month, including a home run on Monday shortly after Dominguez was brought up to the major leagues.

Nestor Cortes will open the series against the Red Sox, which begins Thursday, and Clarke Schmidt will follow on Friday after the two essentially split a game in the final rotation.

Boone said the Yankees would soon move to a five-man rotation, which would mean one starter would be skipped or taken out of the group.

“If we make the playoffs, we might be able to get one more player out … or maybe even two,” said Boone, who added that he has not spoken to any pitchers about training in the bullpen.

“You don’t necessarily know how any of them would or wouldn’t play down there (in the bullpen),” he added. “At the end of the day, you’re just trying to make the best decisions for the club, and we’ll have those conversations.”

Boone said “it’s cool” to have two candidates for Rookie of the Year in Gil and Austin Wells.

Boone said Wells’ season was “phenomenal.”

“He’s been outstanding and such a key part of our lineup in the middle of the batting order over the last few months, he’s really come into his own as a hitter,” Boone said of Wells, who hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game in the 10th inning. “And all in such a critical position, I think he’s done very well defensively behind the plate.”

On September 11, all uniformed Yankees members wore the caps of the city’s emergency services.

Boone, who had been torn over the years about which hat to wear, decided to honor the NYPD.

“It was obviously a terrible day in our history, a sad day. Obviously a day that was very significant for our city,” Boone said. “To be home and to be able to pay tribute is significant, and hopefully we can do just that and do our part to honor and remember those who lost their lives that day.”

The Yankees, Montefiore Einstein and Fans for the Cure will host a free prostate cancer screening test for ticketed fans on Thursday before the game.

Beginning with the opening of the stadium gates at 5:30 p.m. and throughout the first innings of the game, PSA blood tests will take place in private booths on the 200-level concourse between the New Era Team Store and Section 223.
