Yacht sinks: Co-defendant of missing tech billionaire died in car accident days before disaster in Italy

A co-defendant of British technology entrepreneur Mike Lynch died in England when he was hit by a car, just days before Lynch and five other people disappeared when a luxury superyacht sank off the coast of Italy on Monday, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.

Stephen Chamberlain, 52, a former executive at Autonomy Corp., was acquitted along with Lynch in June of charges in a multi-billion dollar fraud case related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion acquisition of Lynch’s company.

Chamberlain was “fatally struck by a car while running” in Cambridgeshire on Saturday, his lawyer Gary Lincenberg said in a statement.

“He was a courageous man of unparalleled integrity. We miss him deeply,” Lincenberg said. “Steve successfully fought to restore his good name in court earlier this year, and his good name now lives on through his wonderful family.”

Chamberlain, formerly the company’s vice president of finance, was accused of artificially inflating Autonomy’s revenue and making false and misleading statements to auditors, analysts and regulators.

Chamberlain’s family released a statement through Cambridgeshire Police saying he was “a much loved husband, father, son, brother and friend”.

“He was an amazing human being whose sole purpose in life was to help others in any way he could,” the statement said.

Police said the driver, a 49-year-old woman, was still at the scene of the accident in the English village of Stretham and was assisting with the investigation.

WHO IS MIKE LYNCH, THE BRITISH TECH ENTREPRENEUR WHO IS MISSING AFTER YACHT SINKING?

The strange coincidence of Chamberlain’s death came just days before Lynch and five other people – including Christopher Morvillo, one of Lynch’s lawyers who had defended him in the fraud trial, and Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, who testified in Lynch’s defense – disappeared when the Bayesian superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily early Monday.

The other three people still missing are believed to be Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah, Bloomer’s wife Neda and Morvillo’s wife Judy.

On Wednesday, divers found two bodies inside the superyacht, sources familiar with the rescue effort told NBC News. It was unclear whose bodies were found.

Ten crew members and 12 passengers, including British, American and Canadian citizens, were on board when the ship capsized. The body of a man was recovered, identified as ship’s cook Recaldo Thomas, a citizen of Antigua. Fifteen people were rescued, including a one-year-old girl, authorities said.
