XCOM 2 is only $3 a day on Steam – cheaper than the bus I took to work this morning or 1/5 of a World of Warcraft subscription
XCOM 2 is such a good game that I feel odd taking the time to explain it to someone who doesn’t know it. But in case you’ve never heard of Firaxis’ turn-based tactical masterpiece, let me explain the game’s structure.
Giving us a 94% in our 2016 review of XCOM 2, this game essentially set a new standard for its genre, building on the first game—also a smash hit—with new mechanics and a wonderfully oppressive atmosphere that makes each playthrough a thrill.
What’s really great about the series is its reliance on consistency. Members of your squad can die from an unfortunate dice roll, and it’s extremely easy to get into a tailspin, desperately trying to cobble together enough resources and troops to stop the aliens from squashing you to a pulp.
It also currently costs $3 (£1.74) on Steam for 28 hours and 28 minutes, which is a bargain for a cup Coffee, not to mention one of the best tactical games of the last decade. Plus, it’s cheaper than the bus I took to work this morning, and I’m pretty sure it’s a lot more fun than public transportation.
It should be noted, however, that the game’s top DLC, War of the Chosen (which is excellent and definitely worth getting), doesn’t have a similar discount, so if you want to take advantage of it, I’d hold off on paying, especially since it was similarly priced at around $2.70 (£2.40) in June according to SteamDB’s price history, and similar discounts are offered regularly.
If you’re really strapped for cash, though, the FOMO might not be so bad. The base game saw similar discounts last year, but given the significant gaps between those deals, it would be logical not to snap it up for much less than a Big Mac, the price of 7 Freddos, or a fifth of the price of a US subscription to World of Warcraft.
