X announces closure of operations in Brazil

X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, announced today that it is ceasing operations in Brazil but will continue to be available to users in the country.

The announcement came amid a legal battle with Brazil’s Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes, who sought to block certain accounts on X as part of an investigation into election disinformation and “digital militias.”

A post on X’s global government affairs account said Moraes “threatened our legal representative in Brazil with arrest if we did not comply with his censorship orders.”

The company continued: “To protect the safety of our employees, we have decided to close our operations in Brazil with immediate effect. The X service will continue to be available to the people of Brazil.”

In an earlier post, X listed some of the accounts affected, saying they included “a pastor, a current parliamentarian and the wife of a former parliamentarian.”

Earlier this year, Moraes opened an investigation into Elon Musk after the owner of X said he would defy a court order by lifting restrictions on certain accounts. Then the company seemed to change course and said it would block the accounts after all.

Supporters of former far-right Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro have criticized Moraes and called for his impeachment. Bolsonaro lost the 2022 election and Brazil’s Supreme Electoral Court has barred him from running for office again for eight years, claiming he tried to rig the election through his fraud allegations.

Musk, who visited Brazil in 2022 and met with Bolsonaro, also said Moraes “should resign or be impeached.”

In his post today, X said: “Our Brazilian collaborators have no responsibility or control over whether content is blocked on our platform” and “the Brazilian people have a choice to make: democracy or Alexandre de Moraes.”
