WSDOT has four highways closed this weekend

No matter where you go this weekend, there will be construction delays with four highways closed Friday through Monday.

A visit to the pumpkin patch or a trip to the Seattle Mariners’ final homestand will take a lot longer than expected. Five major construction projects will have a regional impact on weekend plans.

State Route 520 (SR 520) over Lake Washington; Interstate 405 (I-405) through Renton northbound; State Route 167 (SR 167) south through Kent; both directions of Interstate 5 (I-5) between Federal Way and Fife; and the Mercer Street ramps to both northbound and southbound I-5 will all be impacted by construction projects.

Closure SR 520

Both directions of SR 520 will be closed on the other side of the lake between I-5 and the east side, which includes the bike path. Workers need space to get under the new Montlake lid.

“They are working on their lighting under the lid right now,” said Steve Peer with the Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT). “We have a 3-hectare area with an area of more than 520 square meters. This includes lighting and a sprinkler system. We are making sure everything works because we are close to finally opening this project to the public.”

This is one of the final weekends of work on the five-year project to improve Montlake’s connection to SR 520.

“After that, we’re just putting the finishing touches on the project,” said Peer. “We still need to open up a lot of trail connections for bikes and pedestrians, so that’s what’s going to take some time. It’s the final work before we start this project. We plan to open this project probably in late November, early December.”

The final and final full closure of this project is scheduled for the weekend of October 12th. SR 520 will close at 11 p.m. Friday evening and should reopen at 5 a.m. Monday.

Closure of I-405 southbound

Southbound I-405 will require a five-mile closure between Sunset Boulevard and Coal Creek Parkway to allow crews to shift traffic to a new bridge. This is part of the 405/Renton to Bellevue extension project, which is expected to be completed next year. This begins on Friday evening at 11:00 p.m., with all lanes reopening at 4:00 a.m. on Monday.

Closure of SR 167 through Kent

Road paving and striping will close all southbound lanes between SR 516 and South 277th Street in Kent. Heavy traffic is expected on West Valley Highway. The closure begins at 12 p.m. on Friday and ends at 4 a.m. on Monday.

I-5 closures

How do you transport huge steel beams weighing 230,000 pounds each? By closing both directions of I-5.

This happens between Highway 18 and 54th Avenue, where a new bridge is being built at the Fife curve. Drivers still have access during the day. I-5 will remain closed on Saturday and Sunday evenings from 10:30 p.m. to approximately 8:00 a.m

And just when you thought it was over, you close the Mercer Street on-ramp to I-5. The driveway will be closed for roadworks at 10pm on Friday evening and will reopen at 5am on Monday.

And I know you’re asking. Why is WSDOT closing four highways in the same weekend?

It’s about braving the bad autumn and winter weather. There just aren’t enough sunny weekends to get this work done anymore.
