World number one Jannik Sinner continues his campaign and takes his first victory at the US Open

World number one Jannik Sinner continued his hunt for his first US Open title and reached a semifinal with Jack Draper.

Sinner, who had started the tournament under a bad star due to his doping scandal, defeated Daniil Medvedev in a strange quarterfinal and emerged victorious with 6:2, 1:6, 6:1 and 6:4.

The Italian was not at his best but will take confidence from victory in what some see as the de facto final.

He took revenge for his loss to Medvedev in the Wimbledon quarterfinals in July and showed a good mentality to get to this point despite the drama that surrounded him in the run-up to the tournament.

Sinner is now the clear favorite not only to beat Draper in Friday’s semifinals, but also to win a second Grand Slam title.

“It was very tough. We know each other pretty well, we’ve played in Australia and London, so we knew it was going to be very physical,” Sinner said.

“They were two very strange sentences. I am very happy.

“It’s incredible to play here. I’m very happy to be in the semifinals in New York for the first time.”

It was a repeat of the Australian Open final in January, where Sinner came from two sets down to win, and with another five-set clash at Wimbledon on the cards, there was a chance it could be a long affair.

However, this did not work out because the game was played quickly despite the decisive moments in both directions.

Sinner won the first set with two breaks of serve, but Medvedev responded and raced into the second set, dropping only one game.

In the third set, the roles were reversed: Sinner took the lead again and saw the finish line, winning a much more competitive fourth set.
