Workers repair railroad tracks damaged by Friday’s storm

TOWN OF ADAMS, N.Y. (WWNY) – CSX crews have been working day and night to repair storm-damaged railroad tracks near Adams Center.

Friday’s heavy rains and flash floods left a 20-foot-deep crater, destroying railroad tracks that play an important role in the economy of local industry and agriculture in Jefferson County.

“This is critical for businesses in Jefferson County. We’re always looking to grow it. We want to get the railroad repaired and have the railroad cars rolling right on it,” said Marshall Weir, CEO of Jefferson County Economic Development.

On Monday, after a weekend of 12-hour days, CSX crews worked to fix the problem. The hole has now been filled.

The speed with which CSX has tried to get the railroad up and running as quickly as possible shows how important the railroad is not only to the north of the country, but to the entire world.

“They are loaded onto railroad cars and can then be loaded onto ships and shipped anywhere in the world. This is both a local and an international problem,” Weir said.

Weir says rail transport remains an important tool for the north of the country when it comes to attracting new manufacturers.

“People don’t necessarily think about driving their cars on the road, but a lot of goods are transported by rail,” he said.

CSX is telling customers that deliveries could be delayed for up to a week. In the meantime, alternate routes are being identified.
