Workers and residents express concern after mass shooting near Speedway, Swan

TUCSON, Arizona (13 News) – Four people continue to recover after a mass on Sunday morning near Speedway and Swan.

The investigation into the incident led to the entire area being cordoned off and shops remaining closed throughout the day.

On Monday, business operations were back to normal, with only traces of the shooting visible. 13 News spoke to Transplanting pizza about being forced to remain closed. They said Sundays are usually less busy, but for workers, going without a paycheck for an entire day can be challenging.

“I lost about 10 hours of pay. That’s a good portion of my salary,” said Kyle Joyner, manager of Transplant Pizza.

He was about to reopen the pizzeria on Sunday when he got a call from his boss informing him of the shooting. Fortunately, the pizzeria was closed after he paid his bills.

“I’m glad I at least paid my rent, my utilities and everything else. So that’s good. If this had happened two weeks ago, I probably would have had a harder time.”

He said many of the crimes he witnessed in the area were very small, such as the theft of the tip jar. The investigation also involved a nearby neighborhood, where 13 News spoke to a woman who had had enough of the crime in the area.

“I don’t feel safe here anymore,” said Sharon Spies, who has lived in the area for three decades. “I can’t even walk to Sprouts. I’m very proud of my home and my city.”

She said she started feeling insecure a few years ago.

“Five or six years ago, everyone started sleeping in my alley,” she said. “It was just chaos. Just a huge mess.”

She attributes this fear to the homeless who have moved into the area and is calling on the city of Tucson to look for solutions.

“Why don’t these people explore these options when there are so many places they can turn to for help?” Spies asked.

13 News examined the statistics on Tucson Police Department Data and Analytics Dashboard. In District 6, the crime rate has remained stable over the past four years.

Compared to the other districts, officers in District 6 responded to calls the second most frequently, with officers in District 3 responding only slightly more.

Please note: This data covers the entire District 6, not just the Swan and Speedway areas.
