Worcestershire residents oppose plans for wedding venue

Plans to convert a country house into a wedding venue have caused anger among local residents.

The owners of Shelsley Grange, near Great Witley in Worcestershire, want to erect a large marquee in the grounds of the Grade II listed house to host weddings.

But neighbors say the surrounding streets are not suitable for such traffic volumes and have raised concerns about noise, garbage and impacts on wildlife.

The homeowners were asked for comment through their real estate agent HPD Architecture.

Since plans for the marquee were submitted to Malvern Hills District Council last month, dozens of objections have been received online.

Earlier this week, residents also gathered outside Shelsley Grange to protest against the plan, with some holding placards reading “Say No to the Grange Plan”.

Andy Griffee said the increased traffic could pose “a real danger to local motorists, dog owners, horse riders, pedestrians and cyclists”.

He added: “The house is in the middle of a very narrow alley where there is no speed limit or lighting.”

The plans would require parking for around 75 vehicles at Shelsley Grange for weddings, but residents say the lane is so narrow that garbage trucks cannot get through.

Instead, a small flatbed truck collects a limited number of garbage bags from each house.

Rebecca Perry said she has lived in the area for 44 years and found the wedding venue proposal “appalling”.

She said the plans would “lead to more traffic and noise in this peaceful place” and any setting off of fireworks by wedding parties would “cause fear and terror among the horses in the pasture”.

Local residents also expressed concern that local wildlife, including red kites, bats and buzzards, would be affected by the development.

The consultation period for the building application ends on 22 August.
