Women’s soccer team defeats Drexel 2-1 in season opener

Thanks to two goals in the first half, the Saint Joseph women’s soccer team opened its 2024 season with a 2-1 victory over local rival Drexel on Friday night at Sweeney Field.

How it happened
• Newcomer from St. Joe’s Gracie Salais gave the Hawks an early lead when they scored a rebound from a header by Nicole Everard to score her first college goal, making it 1-0 in the 6:11 minute.
Emily Hanrahan extended Saint Joseph’s lead to 2-0 in the 42nd minute with a goal from the left wing into the bottom right corner after a pass from Jaliyn Parrotte.
• Drexel cut its deficit in half early in the second half when Elise Duffy converted a penalty rebound to make it 2-1 in the 57th minute.
• The Dragons continued to challenge the Hawks and tried to equalize, but St. Joe’s defense and goalie Katie Cappelletti Drexel fended off every opportunity to secure the win.

In the box score
• Cappelletti saved the most shots of the game with four shots to secure the win.
Natalie Nevins provided an assist for Hanrahan’s goal.
