Thanks to two goals in the first half, the Saint Joseph women’s soccer team opened its 2024 season with a 2-1 victory over local rival Drexel on Friday night at Sweeney Field.
How it happened
• Newcomer from St. Joe’s Gracie Salais gave the Hawks an early lead when they scored a rebound from a header by Nicole Everard to score her first college goal, making it 1-0 in the 6:11 minute.
• Emily Hanrahan extended Saint Joseph’s lead to 2-0 in the 42nd minute with a goal from the left wing into the bottom right corner after a pass from Jaliyn Parrotte.
• Drexel cut its deficit in half early in the second half when Elise Duffy converted a penalty rebound to make it 2-1 in the 57th minute.
• The Dragons continued to challenge the Hawks and tried to equalize, but St. Joe’s defense and goalie Katie Cappelletti Drexel fended off every opportunity to secure the win.

• Cappelletti saved the most shots of the game with four shots to secure the win.
• Natalie Nevins provided an assist for Hanrahan’s goal.
