Women’s soccer loses to UNCW

WILMINGTON, NC – The Coastal Carolina women’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, losing 2-0 to the UNCW Seahawks on Wednesday night in Wilmington, NC.

The Seahawks took the lead in the sixth minute when Kayla Burroughs shot the ball over the outstretched arm of the Coastal keeper. Vivienne Carr to give UNCW a 1-0 lead.

Burroughs nearly doubled UNCW’s lead in the 18th Minute when her header flew just over the bar.

First semester Yasmin Azar had Coastal’s first chance of the half when she caught a Seahawks defender flat-footed and deflected a blocked shot to keep the game at 1-0.

The Chants continued to put pressure on the Seahawk defense as Tamlyn Parkes She defended herself from outside the penalty area, but her shot went just wide.

At the end of the half, UNCW had more shots on goal than CCU (3-2), but CCU led 2-1 on corners.

In the first 15 minutes of the second period, the Seahawks were the aggressors, shooting four times, including one on goal, but not allowing the Chants to fire a single shot.

In the 68thth Minute Coastal tried to equalize when Silje Nilsen swung a corner kick to the top of the Camryn McKees Head that shook the woodwork but missed the way into the net.

Just a minute later, Nilsen played the ball Rami Rapp to play them one-on-one with the UNCW goalkeeper, who saved a key shot and kept the score at 1-0.

Coastal’s momentum was halted in the 1970s.th Minute when UNCW was awarded a penalty. Lexi Vegoda stepped up to the penalty spot and shot the ball up the middle where Carr deflected it. However, the ball fell back to Vegoda’s feet and she made no mistake on her second attempt to give the Seahawks a 2-0 lead.

In the remaining 20 minutes of the game, neither team was able to get a shot off, giving UNCW a 2-0 win.

“First of all, you have to give credit to UNCW, they are a very well-coached team and were incredibly disciplined both with and without the ball. Although we created some real chances and controlled moments in the game, unfortunately we were not able to capitalize on them,” said head coach Jo Chubb. “However, I am incredibly proud of our team’s resilience and response in the face of adversity. We never gave up playing and creating opportunities to get back in the game. The girls are disappointed, but we have to be able to pick ourselves up, reflect and then turn our attention to a real opportunity that comes our way on Sunday when we face a top SEC team.”

The Chanticleers remain on the road to face No. 15 Auburn on August 25 at 3 p.m. ET.
