Women’s soccer game between Rutgers and UMass turns into a brawl when punches are thrown on the field

Two college soccer players had to be separated after they got into a heated altercation during a game on Sunday. The feuding strikers have been suspended from their teams’ next two games.

It was just 10 minutes into the second half of Rutgers’ game against the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Massachusetts, when Gia Girman, a Rutgers forward, was sent off for a foul. She was just getting up from the turf when Ashley Lamond, one of UMass’ forwards, came over to pick up the ball.

Footage from the pitch shows the two players grappling and then punching each other as they fall back to the ground, pulling each other’s hair until they are pulled apart by their teammates.

It is unclear what exactly sparked the altercation, but both players received a red card and are now banned from playing in their respective teams’ next two games, according to National Collegiate Athletic Association rules.

Bella Recino, a midfielder last year at UMass, scored a last-minute goal to seal a 1-0 victory over Rutgers. With four more yellow cards issued in the remaining minutes of the game, two for each team, it may be just as well that the two teams won’t have to face each other on the field again this season.

According to the Associated Press, Rutgers later acknowledged that a “brawl” occurred in the 55th minute, but neither team had made an official statement on the incident as of Monday.
