Women’s football welcomes Houston for a friendly match on Saturday

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s soccer team will play its only preseason exhibition game when it hosts the University of Houston Cougars at 11 a.m. Saturday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

Admission to the exhibition fight is free.

After almost two weeks of training, the Vaqueros are excited to see another opponent on the field. The Vaqueros have had good training sessions leading up to the friendly with the Cougars and have made progress since the first practice.

“I want them to be relaxed and have fun,” UTRGV head coach Mark Foster said. “Obviously I want to see them implement some of the ideas we worked on at the start of preseason. It looked good in training. The girls have been receptive to what we are trying to do. You really don’t know how much they have absorbed and how much they understand until you throw them in the deep end. It’s a wonderful opportunity and we are very excited to have this group playing because they have worked hard over the last few weeks.”

The matchup with the Cougars will be a tough test for the Vaqueros as they prepare for their season opener against Texas Southern on August 15. A matchup like this will allow the Vaqueros to gauge their level of preparedness.

At the end of the day, it is not the final result that counts, but the progress achieved through this encounter.

After the exhibition game, the Vaqueros will have five days to prepare for the season opener, which begins at 6:30 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track Complex.
