Women’s football looks back on the previous season

The Owls discuss what they focused on in the preseason and what their expectations are for the 2024 season, with new captains, familiar faces and newcomers. The program announced that goaltender Lexi Gonzalez and junior defender Leila Etemadi were named captains for 2024 before the start of the preseason.

Florida Atlantic is now in its second year in the American Athletic Conference and finished fifth in the AAC preseason poll. Gonzalez, defender Jodi Smithand midfielder Sofia Voldby were named as the three players to watch at FAU.

The Owls finished the 2023 season with a 3-3-3 record in conference play. Florida Atlantic made its first appearance in the AAC Championship Tournament, defeating South Florida (1-0) to advance to the semifinals.

Sunday, August 25, marks the start of the 2024 travel season as the Owls will head to Louisiana for their first away game. Last season, Florida Atlantic faced the Ragin Cajuns in Boca Raton, when forward Sloane Young scored her second goal of the season in the 15th minute and took the lead. Shortly before the end of the first half Michelle Horan scored her first goal of the season to extend the lead. Louisiana responded with a goal, but it was not enough as the Owls won 2-1.

This is the first game of a back-to-back road trip for Florida Atlantic over the next week. Once the Owls return from Lafayette, they will be back on the road to face one of the two SEC opponents they face this season. They will face Alabama on Thursday, August 29th and Tennessee on September 8th. Kickoff for Alabama is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. EST and for Tennessee at 1:00 p.m.
