Women’s football holds up well in friendly match against Houston

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s soccer team defeated the University of Houston Cougars 2-0 in their exhibition match on Saturday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

After allowing a goal in the opening minutes of the first 30-minute session, the Vaqueros got better and didn’t allow many chances until the final seven minutes when the Cougars scored their second goal.

The defense held its position, prevented crosses and kept the Cougars away from the penalty area.

Offensively, the Vaqueros put the Cougars under pressure and had several good chances. In the second 30-minute session, the Vaqueros were on the Cougars’ heels.

In her only appearance of the preseason, UTRGV Head Coach Mark Foster liked what he saw from his team today.

“This group of players only came together two Saturday mornings ago,” Foster said. “To put in a performance like that after two weeks against a Power Four opponent. I’m absolutely thrilled. They won. They took their chances and deserved to win, but for much of the game we were superior and created chances. The positive for me is that we looked solid defensively, which is what I want. Today we were able to create chances against a really good opponent and looked dangerous at times. We can build on that.”

The Vaqueros now prepare for their season opener on August 15, hosting the Texas Southern Tigers at 6:30 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. Admission is free, but fans will need a digital pass to gain entry. Fans can sign up for the UTRGV Soccer Pass at GoUTRGV.com/SoccerPass.
