Women’s basketball announces non-league schedule

QUEENS, NY The St. John’s women’s basketball program announced its 11-game non-league schedule on Monday.

The non-league schedule includes 11 opponents from eight different conferences, including the ACC and Big Ten. The Johnnies will play six home games and five road games during the non-league portion of their schedule. Over the past two seasons, the team has an 11-1 record in non-league games at Carnesecca Arena.

St. John’s opens its 50thth anniversary season on November 4 against Saint Peter’s at the Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm have won seven home opening games in a row and are 11-1 under Head Coach Joe Tartamella.

Later in the week, the Johnnies will play on the road for the first time, making the short trip to Brooklyn to face LIU on November 8. The two already faced each other in last year’s season opener, when the Red Storm crushed the Sharks 81-44 on November 6, 2023.

The team will continue its three-game road trip on Nov. 13 when it travels to Baltimore to face Loyola Maryland at Reitz Arena. The two teams met for the first time in the 2023-24 season, and St. John’s recorded a 71-49 victory at Carnesecca Arena.

The Red Storm will finish their trip with a visit to Rhode Island on Nov. 17. The Johnnies will visit the Ryan Center for the first time since 2011 to face the Rams, who advanced to the Atlantic 10 Tournament championship last season. In last year’s meeting, St. John’s held off a 12-2 fourth-quarter run to defeat URI by double digits, 55-44, in Queens.

Seventeen days later, Coach Tartamella’s group will return to the friendly atmosphere of Carnesecca Arena on November 21 to welcome Marist. The Red Storm defeated the Red Foxes 50-40 in last year’s low-scoring game in Poughkeepsie. Sandra led the strong defensive effort with six steals, including five in the first half.

On November 24, St. John’s will host Stony Brook for the 12th time.th Meeting between the two programs. The Seawolves have a 28-4 record entering the 2023-24 season and will be led by new head coach Joy McCorvey, who was captain of the Red Storm for four years from 2006-2010.

Four days later, the Johnnies will close out their three-game home series with a game against Harvard on Thanksgiving Day. The two teams last met seven years ago in the second round of the WNIT, when the Red Storm defeated the Crimsons 62-57.

For the third time in the last four years, the Red Storm will face Penn State on Dec. 2. The team will travel to the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, Pennsylvania, to play a Big Ten opponent on the road for the first time in seven years. The Lady Lions are coming off their most successful season in a decade and have advanced to the 2023-24 WBIT semifinals.

Six days later, St. John’s returns home to face a power conference opponent for the second consecutive year at Wake Forest on Dec. 8. The two teams will meet for the fourth time overall and the first time since 2019. The last time they met at Carnesecca Arena on Nov. 22, 2019, the Red Storm defeated the Demon Deacons 82-74.

On Dec. 11, the Johnnies will travel to Long Island to face Hofstra for the first time in 11 years at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Center in Hempstead. St. John’s leads the standings at 17-2 since its inaugural season in 1974-75.

The Red Storm conclude their non-conference play on Dec. 15 against Fairfield in Queens. The Stags are coming off a historic season and boast the second-best winning percentage in NCAA Division I (93.9%), trailing only undefeated National Champions South Carolina.

Following the 11-game non-conference schedule, St. John’s will compete as part of an 18-contest BIG EAST schedule to be released in the fall.
