Women prepare to tee off for lessons at the Links at Pine Hill

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (WMC) – More and more women are picking up golf clubs, just in time for the Women’s Golf Clinic hosted by the Memphis Urban League at the Links at Pine Hill.

“We’re trying to introduce you so you can make a decision whether this is something you want to do or a place and space you want to be,” Judge Earnestine Hunt Dorse said.

Dorse is vice president of the Memphis Urban League. She is no stranger to golf.

“It prepares you for ups and downs,” Dorse said. “Because if you hit the ball really well and the next one is really bad, you have to push the bad ball out of the way and keep going.”

Now she and the Memphis Urban League want more women to join them for the course.

During a two-hour class this weekend, women who are new to the game can learn and ask questions.

“There are so many terms in golf that you thought had no meaning,” Dorse said. “Fore is not just a number, it means you’re about to get hit.”

Women also gain practical experience in putting, chipping and full swing.

“The thing is, you hit for show,” Dorse said. “That’s the tee shot. You think and you get that adrenaline rush. But you have to putt to make money.”

The women will work closely with experienced golfers, such as Penny Hardaway from Memphis, who will serve as a golf instructor.

Judge Dorse said each woman would go home with new skills.

However, they hope that women will be able to make contacts beyond the course.

“It’s a safe place for women to come out,” Dorse said. “If you have a meeting, you can play all 9 holes on the golf course. That’s your invitation. You can set it up as if you were one of the men. Women just need to be able to be where they need to be to get their maximum benefit.”
