Women in STEM subjects and skilled trades received financial support through WE Energies grant

FENNIMORE, Wis. (WMTV) – Southwest Wisconsin Technical College’s new scholarship gives women in an underrepresented career field the opportunity to overcome barriers.

“Help them realize their dreams for the future and create a more vibrant and brighter future for Wisconsin as a whole and our region,” said Angie Herting, director of development and major giving.

A $10,000 grant from We Energies directly supports the financial needs of women in this underrepresented field.

“After they complete 15 credits in the program, they receive a $500 scholarship,” said Dennis Cooley, executive director of advancement.

“If they complete 30 credits, they get an additional $1,000, and if they complete 45 credits, they get an additional $1,500.”

The goal is to help students build a successful career.

“One of the things we’re trying to do is raise money for the student success plans,” Cooley said. “Every single student will have a plan for that program, and our recruiters, our counselors, and our financial aid program all come together to help with that.”

Advisor Matt Schneider said it was gratifying to see how everything was coming together for the students.

“Often times they may not have been exposed to it before and this is a great way to have those conversations and make sure they are aware of all the options that are out there,” Schneider said.

He works with students every day, preparing them for life after college.

“The sooner we expose them, the sooner we can allow them to enter the workforce and programs,” Schneider said.
