Women build homes with Marquette County Habitat for Humanity

ISHPEMING, Michigan (WLUC) – Women are working together to break down stereotypes and learn new skills.

Habitat for Humanity of Marquette County is hosting its annual Women Build through Saturday. Thanks to 45 volunteers, two new Habitat for Humanity homes in Ishpeming, 260 Silver Street and 265 Marble Street, are nearing completion.

“I think it’s really about empowering women and giving them new skills. Having the opportunity to come together, foster community and meet new people,” said volunteer Allison Clark.

Repair program coordinator Henry Sale says Marquette County Habitat for Humanity has been hosting the Women Build program for six years.

“We always want to make sure that all people of all genders are included in the construction industry,” Sale said. “You know, it’s an area that doesn’t often get as much attention, and we want to make sure that we’re someone that does that.”

Sale says providing these new homes helps revitalize a neighborhood. He also says women don’t just have to volunteer at the Women Build event.

“Our commitment to inclusion is not limited to just three days a year. We want to encourage everyone to be there all year round,” Sale added.

Volunteer Astrid Husko says the event encourages people to learn new skills, regardless of gender.

“For me, it’s just something I’ve always loved doing. Growing up, I always wanted to learn how to build, but I never had the opportunity,” Husko said. “So I’m taking that opportunity now as an adult.”

Anyone aged 16 and over can take part on Fridays and Saturdays between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
