Woman splits from boyfriend of 10 years because of a “sweet gesture” – and is applauded

A woman received support online after explaining her reasons for breaking up with her long-term boyfriend.

The woman, known on Reddit as u/suspicious-tree-642, announced on the platform on July 3 that she had decided to end her long-term relationship because she was proposed to inappropriately at her best friend’s wedding. The post, which was upvoted more than 6,300 times, sparked significant discussion online and resulted in an outpouring of praise for the woman and her decision.

“My best friend Amy got married last week,” said the 36-year-old. “I was her maid of honor and worked incredibly hard to make sure her wedding was a success.”

The day seemed to be going smoothly, but then the worst twist came when her boyfriend of ten years, Danny, 31, proposed to her during the wedding reception, despite the bride’s explicit advice not to do so.

The woman noted that she and Amy have a long-standing friendship and have been inseparable since elementary school. They attended the same college and live in the same neighborhood.

“She is the closest thing I have to a sister,” the woman said.

Because of this deep bond, the events of the wedding were even more shocking for the couple.

“The marriage proposal at the ceremony was inappropriate and wrong on every level,” said Becky Whetstone, a marriage and family therapist. Newsweek. “Especially since it was discussed as an option and rejected.”

She added: “It shows that (some) boys do what they want without regard for others.”

Amy had met her now-husband Bobby, who happens to be Danny’s older brother, at a house party hosted by the woman. The two couples were close and shared many milestones together. However, tensions rose when Danny suggested proposing to her at his brother’s wedding. Both Amy and the woman immediately rejected the idea, calling it tasteless and inappropriate.

The woman described her horror when Bobby stopped the music during the wedding reception to make an announcement. He praised Amy and talked about the special day, which the woman initially found to be a sweet gesture.

Then Bobby said, “And now the day is extra special thanks to my brother’s announcement,” whereupon Danny appeared with a ring on his knee. Amy burst into tears and ran out, and her friend followed her, yelling at Danny for his insensitivity.

Chaos reigned as the wedding party tried to comprehend what had happened. Amy’s first reaction was anger at the woman, suspecting her of having something to do with it. However, a bridesmaid who had witnessed the events vouched for her and confirmed that she had resisted the proposal. The bridesmaids and Amy retreated to Amy’s suite and left the celebration behind.

In the aftermath, the woman wasted no time in ending her relationship with Danny. She called him that same evening to break up and demanded that he move out of her apartment by the end of the week. Concerned about her pets, she had her mother pick them up, fearing Danny might harm them or take them out of spite. Eventually, Danny left, taking her television and game consoles with him, although his mother later returned the consoles.

Amy now wants to have her marriage annulled because she feels she cannot trust Bobby. He had given Danny permission to propose to her without consulting Amy, a betrayal that shook her confidence. The brothers’ mother supported Amy, reimbursed her for the wedding expenses and encouraged her to go on her honeymoon anyway. Amy decided to take the woman with her to Australia for the planned vacation.

Despite Danny’s attempts at reconciliation and messages from his friends who described her behavior as harsh, his ex remained steadfast.

“Some of his friends got involved too, saying I was an asshole for ending a 10-year relationship because of a mistake. That he was just doing a nice thing to prove how much he loved me,” she said. “Except the nice thing was to officiate my best friend’s wedding after I said how much I don’t like that kind of stuff.”

Whetstone, who holds a doctorate in marriage and family therapy from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas, commented on the complexity of the situation.

“If everything was going really well between both couples and then this happened and both men are getting the death penalty for their relationship? I think there’s more to the story that was left out,” she said. “Still, the act was not malicious.”

“They most likely thought, mistakenly, that this would make the celebration even more special. I have to assume that the women had good reasons for this drastic measure.”

Although Whetstone has a more nuanced view, numerous viewers online have applauded the woman for sticking to her principles and being loyal to her best friend.

“I don’t understand why people are stupid enough to do something they are EXPRESSLY told not to do and then try to defend themselves by saying ‘but I thought you’d like that!’ Your mother gets it,” said one user, u/cookiemamajr.

Another, u/bestlongestlife, added: “She seems to understand the lack of respect these guys had for her (significant other) and wonders if she admires the young women for standing up for themselves. I certainly do.”

“The bride said no and he did it anyway, I can’t understand this,” shared a third user, u/grubas.
