Woman shot at White Sox game sues team and stadium authority

CHICAGO– A woman who was shot in the leg during a White Sox game last year is suing the team and the Illinois agency that owns Guaranteed Rate Field.

The woman was in the left-field bleachers in section 161 when she was shot during the fourth inning of a game against the Oakland A’s on Aug. 25, 2023, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Monday. She was 42 at the time. A 26-year-old woman sitting in the same section suffered a graze wound to the abdomen.

The plaintiff’s attorney, John J. Malm, issued a press release Thursday saying the lawsuit had been filed in Cook County District Court. To protect her from further harm, the plaintiff was identified only as Jane Doe.

In September 2023, police said it was unclear whether the shots were fired inside or outside the stadium.

The lawsuit alleges that the White Sox and the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority failed to enforce a ban on weapons in the stadium and to protect patrons from foreseeable dangers. It seeks more than $50,000 in damages, as well as compensation for personal injuries and losses.

The lawsuit repeatedly alleges that the defendants allowed a gun into the stadium and failed to warn the woman and other fans about the gun, but no evidence is presented to support this claim.

When asked whether investigators had already determined where the shots came from, Chicago police spokesman Nathaniel Blackman said Tuesday that the investigation was ongoing.

A phone message seeking comment to the team’s press office was not immediately returned. Maria Saldana, ISFA’s general counsel, did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
