Woman seriously injured in shooting near Safeway in Chico

A man is in custody Sunday on suspicion of shooting a woman outside a Safeway in Chico.

Chico Police Department officials said an officer near the Safeway on W. Sacramento Ave. heard a single gunshot just after midnight on Sunday, Aug. 18. The officer saw a woman injured near the entrance of the grocery store and witnessed a vehicle speeding away from the scene at a high rate of speed.

The officer began to assist the woman and called the Chico Fire Department and Butte County EMS. Meanwhile, other officers began searching for the vehicle that had left the area.

The woman was taken to hospital for treatment, but her condition remains critical, officials said on Sunday.

Officers found the suspect’s vehicle parked near the 1100 block of Stewart Avenue. Officers were able to make contact with residents and arrested two people. One of them, a 22-year-old man, was identified as the suspected shooter.

The man was taken into custody on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. No further information about the background to the shooting has been released.
