NORWOOD, Colorado – Search and rescue teams are searching the Lone Cone area outside Norwood for a missing 53-year-old Durango woman who did not return to her camp Wednesday.

According to the San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office, the missing woman, Gina Chase, was traveling with 11 campers from an organized group from Durango and set out alone for a hike into the woods from the Wilson Mesa Trailhead in the Lone Cone area on Wednesday morning.

Chase was supposed to check on the group’s main camp, but was reported missing on Thursday. After searching her campsite, guides discovered that Chase had not slept there the night before and that her daypack, which contained an emergency blanket, whistle, energy bar and some water, was missing.

Chase, who is 5’4″ and weighs 125 pounds, is unlikely to have a cellphone with her because participants are discouraged from bringing one on their so-called quests in order to maximize the spiritual experience in nature, the sheriff’s office said.

San Miguel County officials and search and rescue teams began searching the area Thursday and, with assistance from multiple agencies, will continue their search through the weekend.

“Our team of sheriff’s deputies and search and rescue volunteers are working tirelessly to locate this missing woman. Although their efforts have been unsuccessful so far, we remain hopeful that she will be found,” San Miguel County Sheriff Bill Masters said in a press release.
