Woman killed in car theft at gas station – run over by her own car

JACKSON COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) – A woman has died following a carjacking in Anville, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Daniel Isaacs said it happened around 9:45 a.m. Saturday in front of the T-Mart.

He told WKYT that a suspect named Michael Edwards got out of a car with several other people and then stole a truck parked at the gas station.

According to Sheriff Isaacs, the victim ran outside, grabbed the handle of the truck and was dragged about 40 feet before Edwards ran her over.

Laurel County Coroner Doug Bowling told WKYT that Tracy Clemmons was pronounced dead at 11:45 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph London Hospital.

He believes she died from blunt trauma to the head.

Sheriff Isaacs said Edwards drove for a while before abandoning the vehicle and fleeing into the woods on foot.

Edwards was finally found after several hours of searching. According to Sheriff Isaacs, Michael Edwards was arrested shortly before 3 p.m. in a field on Cornett Chapel Road.

Search efforts were aided by the use of drones by the London Police Department, the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office and the Kentucky State Police.

Edwards is being held at the Jackson County Detention Center. He is charged with murder, reckless endangerment, criminal damage, resisting arrest, repeated felony offenses, auto theft and possession of a handgun as a convicted felon.

His bail is set at $1 million.
