WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes doesn’t believe Caitlin Clark’s record-breaking rookie season is “dominant”

WNBA icon Sheryl Swoopes has once again angered Caitlin Clark fans with her recent comments about the Indiana Fever rookie star.

During his appearance on the Gil’s Arena podcast, Swoopes discussed whether Clark is currently dominating the WNBA.

“If we had a number and said we were going to dominate with Caitlin Clark, what would the numbers have to be?” asked three-time NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas.

“Those are pretty damn good numbers. But for me, that’s not dominant,” Swoopes replied.

Swoopes explained her opinion in more detail, referring to previous statements in which she said that Clark and fellow rookie Angel Reese would not immediately dominate at the W.

WNBA icon Sheryl Swoopes explains false statements by Caitlin Clark and speaks out against her former friend Nancy Lieberman

“People said, ‘Oh my God, you said she wasn’t good,’ but I didn’t say she wasn’t good,” Swoopes said. “I said I didn’t think Caitlin or Angel would come into the league and dominate right away, which I don’t think either of them did. … I still don’t think (Clark) dominates, but she’s a different player than she was in the first half of the season.”

Swoopes may not believe Clark dominates, but her numbers this season tell a different story. Clark averaged 19.5 points, 5.7 rebounds and 8.4 assists per game this season – a stat line that no one in WNBA history has matched or bettered.

Clark also rewrote the WNBA record books, and not just in her rookie season. She has the most assists in a season (321) in league history and sets the WNBA record with 19 assists in a single game. She is also the fastest player to reach 300 assists in history.

As for her rookie statistics, Clark holds the single-season record for most points scored and assists, among other things.

Swoopes believes Clark had an impressive performance, but she wouldn’t call it dominance.

“I never questioned whether Caitlin was a good player. I think she’s a damn good player,” Swoopes explained. “I thought she would need some time to adjust to the pro life and I think that’s exactly what she’s done.”

Hall of Famer Swoopes held an X Spaces earlier this month where she addressed a controversy surrounding past statements about Clark, saying she had been criticized as someone who was “unfair” to the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Swoopes cited Clark’s college resume and said the phrase “25-year-old playing against 20-year-olds” when talking about her tremendous success at that level. She also said Clark played five college seasons, despite only playing four, and averaged 22.7 shots per game, while Swoopes said it was over 40 per game.

Swoopes admitted that she “said the wrong things” during her Spaces chat.

“I don’t owe any of you an apology,” Swoopes said at the event, which was attended by Fox News Digital. “I reached out to Caitlin. We had a great conversation.”
